“Connor is a cancer survivor whose faith has come alive as a result of his life and near death experience. He is a leader among his peers,” wrote his pastor, Rev. John Burger in his letter of recommendation.
Congratulations to the Iowa District West Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) 2014 $1,000 Scholarship winner, Connor Mullen. Mullen is a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Adel, Iowa. An Eagle Scout, leader in Faith’s youth group, and a technician for the church’s audio visual equipment in the sound booth, Mullen is a senior at Adel Desoto Minburn High School this year and will graduate in May of 2014. “I cannot emphasize strongly enough how he stood out as a model student in confirmation,” continued Burger.
“I became familiar with LCEF in Sunday School where I participated in [LCEF’s] stamp program. . . . It was a tangible way for me to see how my investing was making a difference for [LCMS] churches and schools. I like that even young people can feel they are able to contribute and make a difference. It provides a sense of community and unity in one shared goal and mission: growing God’s Kingdom,” wrote Mullen in his scholarship essay. “LCEF is impacting the lives of many people: those who utilize the invested funds as well as those who are making the investments. It provides the necessary funds for churches and schools to grow and improve, which benefits current and future members of that organization. It also gives investors of all ages the ability to save for their own future and share what God has given [them.] Both parties benefit, and that is something to get excited about; a win-win for all!”
“Connor was diagnosed with leukemia in third grade and was critically ill during his fourth grade year. When Connor returned to school, his attitude was remarkable. He was as positive as always even though he may not have felt well. His curiosity and enthusiasm for learning continued. Connor's dedication and work ethic were evident in all his work. He persevered, never gave up. . . . Connor continued his special way of treating students with kindness, respect, and everyone embraced Connor,” wrote his teacher Ms. McCoy in her letter of recommendation.
“While this was such a challenging time for Connor, it helped him become who he is today. He is a young man of the finest character, an Eagle Scout, member of the Academic Decathlon, National Honor Society, an honor student, active in band, speech and theater, and a member of his church youth group. Connor's intelligence, talents, leadership skills, and his high standards will help him achieve any goal he sets. He plans to attend the University of Iowa this fall and major in nursing. Connor will definitely make a difference in the lives of others and would be an outstanding recipient for this scholarship,” wrote McCoy.
