More than $3,000 was raised for missions by Iowa Districts Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF), the Iowa District East (IDE) Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) and Iowa District West (IDW) LWML members. LCEF staff coordinated a Silent Purse Auction at each district LWML convention during June 2014. Iowa LCEF also matched up to $500 per district to be given to their LWML mites for missions.
Some the purses were quite unique and carried special memories. Former IWD LWML President Luana Kading passed on of cancer at the age of 63 on March 31, 2013. Luana’s husband, Doug, is the IDW Camp Okoboji Director. “When Doug saw the LCEF Iowa Districts Silent Purse Auction for Mites, he was excited to have such an appropriate place to donate Luana's purses because she was so passionate about LWML, said Iowa Districts LCEF Vice President Carole White. “It doesn't stop there, Doug asked the campers from his Joy Camp to plant geraniums in some of Luana’s purses for decoration and to help raise funds for the LWML mites for missions.” Joy Camp is a fun-filled three day retreat for campers with special needs held at Camp Okoboji in Milford, Iowa. The campers ‘plant purses’ were a big hit with convention attendees.
The final tally of mites for missions raised from the 2014 Iowa Districts LCEF Silent Purse Auction including LCEF’s $1,000 donation:
Iowa East District LWML - $1,570
Iowa West District LWML - $1,560
“Another Joy Camp followed the convention, July 10-13, 2014, so we saved 60 of the purses for those campers to plant in. All the plants were donated by yet another individual excited about what Doug was doing in memory of his wife and for the sake of LWML missions,” said White.
At the LWML district conventions, LCEF also shared their Young Investors (Y.I.) Club for children and grandchildren ages 0 to 18. Y.I. Club members can learn to give thanks for God's many blessings and to use those blessings wisely to serve Him. With Y.I., learning to understand the value of sharing, saving and spending money is a good place to start. Y.I. features include:
Minimum of $25 to open account (ages 0-18)
Premium interest rate on balances up to $1,000 (3.5% July 2014)
Earn up to $50/year “extra credit” for good grades and community service (ages 7-18)
Savings grow with the child, but are accessible
