Katherine Lundgren is the first of two 2016 North Wisconsin District (NWD) Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) $1,000 scholarship winners!
Katherine is a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Auburndale, Wisconsin. A graduating senior at Auburndale High School (AHS,) Auburndale, Wisconsin, Katherine plans to attend Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, Wisconsin.
In her scholarship application, Katherine wrote about the ministry of LCEF and its investors, “Each investment creates an expanded ministry, enabling churches and individuals to touch the lives of others through their own missions. LCEF gives motivated witnesses the necessary means to accomplish their goals of spreading salvation. … Going into the field of social work, I would love to do mission work or provide Christian counseling in refuge houses for victims or struggling families. If these plans become reality, I can personally invest in LCEF to …begin bettering society through an organization whose Christian values coincide with my own.”
In his letter of recommendation for Katherine, AHS English Department Chair Timothy Gunderman wrote the following:
“Within the first weeks of the 2012 school year, when Katie was a freshman, it was obvious that she brought an impressive range of talents and high levels of work initiative and leadership skills to the classroom. This heightened sense of ingenuity prompted me to challenge and push her; she met the challenges with grace and ease. To say she is diligent and hardworking is to underrepresent her past and present accomplishments; Katie is one of a select few students who set the standard for what I have come to expect in work ethic, writing, and studying.
Katie’s character comes through in all that she does, and in her daily interactions with her peers both in the classroom and around the school. … Katie is an avid participant in many of our school’s student organizations, including numerous leadership roles. Over the past three and a half years, I have not only had the pleasure of witnessing her progress and immense growth in English, but I have watched her grow into a caring and respectful life-long learner. Katie unquestionably demonstrates a genuine interest and concern for the world she is preparing to enter.”
Katherine’s father, Rev. Mark Lundgren, shared many examples of Katherine’s servant heart including playing piano and the French horn for services, teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for several years and serving as a Junior Counselor at Camp Luther. Katherine also has a leadership role in the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is the student council president, has served as an aide in the elementary school, volunteered at the local hospital, participated in the peer mentoring program, lettered in various sports and was active in 4H.
LCEF is blessed to have the funds available to support our youth as they pursue post-secondary education. It is our prayer that they are equipped to become strong, Christian leaders as adults.
