Senior Pastor Retiring After 26 Years – What Now?

When the congregation found out their senior pastor of 26 years was retiring, members realized a need to learn what God’s direction was for this ministry in the midst of such a big change.

As a first step, members of St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in Prior Lake, Minnesota, requested a customized demographic study of their area from Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF). “The data helped members get a better understanding of their community. The information should also help members and leadership as they move through the call process for a new pastor,” said Minnesota South District LCEF Vice President Kurt Fuhr. “It’s important for a congregation to prayerfully find the right fit; a pastor who can shepherd and serve not only current members’ needs but also the needs of their community.”

On July 14, 2016, Fuhr presented the customized demographic study to congregation members. Fuhr facilitated the process as those in attendance not only gleaned insights from the data but they also brainstormed future action steps. Pastor John Vaughn served St. Paul’s since February 1990 and his retirement celebration is on August 7, 2016.
